Chanel

Gabrielle Coco Chanel, born in 1883 in Paris, began her career in the recognized fashion industry, thanks to the opening of her first store in 1909 where men frequently met with the French elite women, to whom Gabrielle sold her decorated hats.

A year later Danielle met Arthur Capel, a member of the Balsan group with whom she was romantically involved. Capel gave her his full support and helped her get the local located on 31 Rue de Cambon, Paris, baptizing it as Chanel Modes. But she found out that there was a couture shop in the same building, so it was clear that she had to design totally different dresses.

In 1913 she introduced a new collection of women’s sportswear at her new boutique named Deauville and Biarritz, also in France. Chanel was fond of simple and elegant designs, so she hated the outfits of some women at the time, which overshadowed others with their extreme opulence.

During World War I, Chanel decided to open a larger boutique opposite to the Ritz Hotel in Paris, where she sold pencil skirts, long sweaters, flannel jackets, sailor blouses and sets. In 1915 her shop was well known and two years later the fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar published her new collection of embroidered tulle and lace evening gowns and her peculiar coat style dresses.

The year 1921 was crucial in the career of Gabrielle Coco Chanel who, considering the versatility of what she offered in her boutique, made the decision to launch her first perfume Chanel No. 5 created by Earnest Beaux. This new product quickly became a huge success.

After this release, Parfums Chanel was created in 1924 by Pierre Wertheimer and in collaboration with Chanel, who had 10% of the shares due to the occupations required by her couture business. That same year Chanel introduced her first pieces of bijouterie, a pair of black and white pearl earrings.

The peculiar cardigan jacket, the famous black dress and the classic tweed suits were a boom in 1925, but it was only the appetizer that would lead Chanel to open a new boutique near the Louvre Museum.

Years later, Chanel inaugurated an exhibit of her diamond jewelry. When World War II began in 1939, Gabrielle Coco Chanel retired, moving to the Ritz Hotel in Paris, and only her perfume and jewelry continued to be sold in existing stores.

In 1953 Chanel reappears in Paris and, at the age of 71 she became the world’s most recognized fashion designer. She reinvented the famous Chanel suit and, in 1955, launched the popular leather handbags with chain handles and her first fragrance for men, Pour Monsieur, which earned her the Oscar Fashion Awards.

Chanel died on January 10, 1971 at the age of 88. The management of thecompany was taken over by Jean Cazaubon, Yvonne Dudel and Phlippe Guibourge. In 1974 the house launched the Cristalle fragrance, inspired by the life and work of Danielle Coco Chanel, and four years later the first prêt-à-porter accessories became known around the world. This time Alain Wertheimer was in charge of Chanel.

In order to meet the expectations of increasingly demanding customers, this prestigious brand was introduced into the world of luxury watchmaking, offering designs full of femininity combined with a touch of freshness and discretion. These extraordinary watches were specially made with diamonds, mother of pearl, pearls, gold plated, platinum and, in the latest creations, steel.
